Register parent launches citizen journalism initiative with SeeClickFix (video)
YARDLEY, Pa. — Journal Register Co., a multimedia company in local news and information and parent company of the New Haven Register, announced Tuesday a major citizen journalism initiative in conjunction with New Haven-based SeeClickFix and that company’s unique program to empower citizens to improve their communities.
Starting immediately, all 18 of Journal Register Co.’s daily newspapers and online publications in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Michigan and Ohio are partnering with www.SeeClickFix.com in the communities they serve.
The partnership provides SeeClickFix portal pages on Journal Register Co. websites that will allow users to observe, report and follow issues in their communities. Website users will be able to create watch areas and track items ranging from poor road conditions to blighted buildings in their communities.
In Greater New Haven, users of SeeClickFix, beyond reporting pothole problems, have used the site to lobby for the return of tolls to the state’s highway as a way to offset Connecticut budget woes and to bring a big-time grocery store to the city.
Journal Register Co. believes this partnership will benefit the communities by:
ÇEncouraging the audience to utilize the SeeClickFix platform to alert fellow residents of impact issues.
ÇEmpowering residents to work with the company’s journalists to address the needs of the community.
ÇHighlighting those who participate and make a difference through news reports.
“Our partnership with SeeClickFix gives our readers a new digital tool to truly make a difference in our community. The more people who use it the more useful it becomes,” said New Haven Register Publisher and Chief Executive Officer Edward Condra. “The fact that the Register is partnering with another New Haven-based operation is a bonus.” Continued...
The company’s 18 daily newspaper websites now feature portal pages linking to SeeClickFix functionality and the partnership will be extended to all of Journal Register Co.’s 150 websites in the coming months.
“The mission of SeeClickFix is to help communities help themselves. It’s that simple,” said Ben Berkowitz, co-founder of SeeClickFix.
The partnership with Journal Register Co. represents the largest expansion for SeeClickFix.
“Journal Register Co. has such a diverse group of communities it serves and they have diverse sets of issues. The company is showing that they want to enable all of their readers to participate more in their community,” Berkowitz said.
