Man gets 38 years in New Haven killing of UConn student
NEW HAVEN — Nicholas Newton was sentenced this morning to 38 years in prison in the shooting death of University of Connecticut student Vladimir Voinov in 2008.
When Superior Court Judge Roland Fasano asked Newton if he had anything to say before the sentence was issued, Newtown, clad in an oversized orange jumpsuit, quietly replied, “no.”
Newton pleaded guilty to felony murder in May three days before jury selection was due to begin for his trial. He also pleaded guilty to first-degree robbery in the Voinov shooting and to attempted first-degree assault for a separate shooting several days after Voinov’s death.
Fasano sentenced Newton to 38 years in prison for the murder charge, 20 years for the robbery charge, and 20 years for the assault charge. All the sentences are to run concurrently.
Assistant State’s Attorney Stacey Haupt placed a framed picture of Voinov on the table during the sentencing at the request of his mother, Lyudmila Voinov.
Lyudmila Voinov spoke about her son before Fasano handed down the sentence. She said Vladimir was a “beautiful boy” who was “taken away from us, the people who loved him.”
“For the rest of my life, I will not stop looking for answers,” she said.
Police allege Newton killed Voinov, who was 21 at the time, while committing a robbery on the afternoon of Aug. 21, 2008 at 353 Poplar St. in Fair Haven. Police have said a marijuana deal gone bad was involved. Newton was identified by witnesses as the triggerman in the shooting.
Two other defendants in that shooting, Anthony Johnson and Akeem Gayle, have already pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and robbery conspiracy.
Voinov, who lived in Hamden, was a graduate of High School in the Community in New Haven. Continued...
