New Haven police officer faces harassment charge over alleged hang-up phone calls
MERIDEN — A New Haven police officer faces harassment charges after he allegedly placed more than 70 hang-up calls to a colleague’s personal cell phone.
Reginald Holston, 43, of Meriden, turned himself in Wednesday to Meriden police, who started an investigation after another city resident, who also is a New Haven police officer, reported a spate of calls to his cell phone in which the caller hung up without saying anything.
Police did not release the identity of the complainant and the arrest warrant affidavit was not yet available in court.
According to Meriden police spokesman Sgt. Lenny Caponigro, the calls came over a period of several weeks, most of them occurring in March. The city officer filed a complaint and Meriden police launched an investigation, securing search warrants for both the victim’s phone and the number that had called it.
The investigation led to Holston, who was charged by warrant with second-degree harassment, police said. He turned himself in Wednesday and was released on a written promise to appear in court Sept. 13.
Holston has 14 years on the job.
New Haven police Capt. Denise Blanchard, the head of Internal Affairs, said the department is aware of the arrest. Holston remained on regular duty Thursday and the situation is being treated, at this point, as off-duty conduct, she said. If additional information arises, she added, that could be reevaluated.
Holston could not be reached for comment and there was no public telephone listing for him.
